John Murray Phelps, Jr.

April 21, 1953 – January 11, 2015

My dear friend, John Phelps, died suddenly and unexpectedly last Sunday. John had rowed 6-seat for me on the 1972 University of Pennsylvania Freshman Lightweight Crew, and in the summer of 1974 he came west to row for me on the Long Beach Rowing Association Elite Lightweight Squad. During the intervening years I have visited John and his wife Sandy periodically in their various homes in Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I last saw John in 2012 at a party of my Philadelphia rowing friends at the home of Lawrence Walsh in Chestnut Hill. That's John in the red shirt on the far right [photo sadly missing on this website].

The two of us took time away from the other guests to reminisce and look forward, a memory which I treasure even more knowing that it has turned out to be our last moments together.

John was one of the nicest and most generous people I have ever known. His teammates and friends are all better for having known him. My sincere condolences to Sandy and to his entire family spanning four generations.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at the Church of St Joseph at 59 Main Street, High Bridge, NJ 08829 on Monday, January 19, 2015 at 10AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory would be most appreciated to the Saint Paul's Food Pantry, 832 Park Avenue, Collingswood, NJ 08108, the Church where John and Sandy were married, and/or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at 14 Penn Plaza, Suite 1615 NY, NY 10122 or www.stjude.org.
