The River & Rowing Museum

I am extremely pleased to announce that the publisher of The Sport of Rowing, Two Centuries of Competition will be the River & Rowing Museum of Henley-on-Thames in England. The Museum was opened in 1998 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the banks of the Thames near the course of the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta. The River & Rowing Museum is the international centre for rowing’s heritage, and I am honored and humbled for my book to be associated with such a fine institution.

Denis Oswald

I am also very pleased to announce that FISA President Denis Oswald has agreed to write a short introduction to the book.

Limited Collector Edition

The limited collector edition is the culmination of seven years of research and writing. There will be 300 copies printed, of which only 250 will ever be available for sale. Each copy of the collector edition will be signed, dedicated and consecutively numbered by me, and there will never be another collector printing, ensuring exclusivity. Each purchaser prior to July 1 will also be listed by name in both editions of the book.
The four 8½ x 11” cloth-bound volumes in their slip-case weigh 19 pounds and contain 2,500 pages with beautiful full-color illustrations throughout. We are all so proud of how the collector edition is turning out. The cost for the set will be $295 US plus shipping.

It should also be remembered that no money goes to me or to my team of volunteers. All of my expenses have been my gift to the rowing community, and so 100% of the net proceeds will go to support rowing in the countries of residence of the purchasers and to support the continuing work of the River & Rowing Museum as they expand and preserve their unique collection of racing boats and memorabilia along with their library and research facilities. Your funds will help make possible the next great rowing book published by the RRM.

To Those of You Who Have Reserved a Collector Edition:

We are very gratified to announce that we have already received 200 reservations for the collector edition from at least eleven countries! We are now taking no more reservations, but with only 250 copies ever available, it seems highly likely that the collector edition will sell out well before summer because a large new group of rowing alumni and parents will quickly become aware of the book in the coming days. Once the racing season begins, they will be visiting regularly for the first time. I will also be showing a facsimile of the four volumes at some major spring regattas in the United States.

Beginning on Wednesday, April 6, it will be possible for anyone to visit the rowing mall at and make a credit card purchase of one or more copies of the collector edition for shipment in October, but those of you who have already reserved a copy will receive via email a link to make your own credit card purchase beginning this coming Wednesday, March 30, just four days from today. This link will remain active for one week. If you choose, you may delay and order directly from row2k after April 6, but we cannot guarantee that the edition won’t sell out in the meantime, and once they are gone, they will be gone forever, even for those who have reserved a copy. However, as long as you purchase a collector edition while they are still available, your priority place in line for a low-numbered copy will be preserved regardless of the date.

The Regular Edition

Plans for the regular edition have also been firmed up. The four-volume paperback edition in its slip-case will have exactly the same content as the collector edition except that the illustrations will be black and white and it will not be signed and numbered. The price of the regular edition will be $95 plus shipping. There will be 1,000 copies printed, of which 750 will be available for sale online. The opportunity to purchase the regular edition for October delivery will also begin on Wednesday, April 6 on the rowing mall at We anticipate that the regular edition will also sell out relatively quickly, but we hope there will still be copies available next fall at the time of publication.

Look for me and the book next weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic!
