Many thanks again for your continued patience in waiting for the publication of The Sport of Rowing, 200 years of rowing history in four volumes. At last the time has arrived! As I write this I am sitting in a room in Anaheim, California numbering, dedicating and signing copies of the collector edition, and it looks like I’ll be at this task for the rest of the week! The slip cases are due to arrive on Friday, so shipping should begin on Monday, October 3rd. The standard edition will arrive here next week, and shipping should begin on Monday, October 10th. This is the first time I have seen all four volumes together, and it is quite a sight.

The price is Going Up on Saturday!

I am so grateful to those of you who have already purchased your copy of The Sport of Rowing or who will do so before shipping begins. Without you, the book could never have been published.

The standard edition continues to be available at two internet sites worldwide: for $95 US plus shipping, and for ₤95 in the UK. These prices will hold only until September 30! After that, they will be raised to $125 US plus shipping on row2k and ₤125 on the Rowperfect website, so you have just three more days to take advantage of the reduced pre-publication prices.

Come see me at the Sew Sporty Tent at the Head of the Charles!

I will be taking orders for the standard edition in person on Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23 in the vendor area at the Head of the Charles in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Look for me either day between 10 and 11:30 AM and between 1 and 2 PM at the Sew Sporty Tent. I will help you log into and place your order. We’ll take a photo of you and me together, and I will ship the photo along with your book signed by me and dedicated to you when I return to California. (Nobody wants to lug 22 pounds around the Head of the Charles!)

If you have already ordered your copy of The Sport of Rowing, come by and say hello anyway. There are so many friends I have not seen in person in years. And while you’re at it check out the fine products of Sew Sporty, either at their tent at regattas or on their website at My very good friends Dave and Loralynn have made custom clothing for my squads for decades now. They are meticulous craftsmen and connoisseurs of historic rowing art, and they will work as hard for your team as you do.

Rowing History Forum

I would also like to again remind those of you in the UK and on the Continent that I will be among the speakers at the Rowing History Forum at the publisher of my book, the River & Rowing Museum in Henley, England, on Saturday, 29 October. The standard edition will be for sale at the increased price of ₤125 at the museum shop, and I will sign your copy and personally thank you. Details on the forum and the dinner at Leander Club the night before are available at:'s-on/adult-events/rowing-history-forum.aspx. (If you have trouble with this URL, go to the River & Rowing Museum website, click on "What's On," then "Adult Events," and scroll down.) I hope to see some of the many friends who have contributed to my research over the years.

Until October!
